Not the B Word

March 10th, 2011

Hello and welcome to The Thursday Blog, or as it is commonly known in Spain: “¿Dónde está el cuarto de baño?” which means “the runners prize”.

For years in Spain they celebrate the country’s love for The Thursday Blog by holding an annual event where they place a copy of the beloved blog on one end of a town, and all the people start at the other side and they run as fast as they can to get to the blog. They run with so much passion like their lives depended on it, as if wild bulls were chasing them…………. By the way, I forgot to mention that wild bulls are chasing them, but that has nothing to do with the event.

So the time is 10:50pm on a Thursday night and I have not stopped since I got up this morning at 6:50am. What a very full day and it brings me to today’s topic called:

Not the B Word

Let’s just talk about the day. It started with waking up. I actually woke up at 6.20am and thought to myself “that wasn’t enough sleep”. I then looked at the time and realised I wasn’t due to get up for at least another 30 mins. I was so happy and I closed my eyes with a smile on my face. 3 seconds later I opened my eyes as my Little Princess was awake and after seeing the time was not 6:50am I was completely confused about where those 30 mins had went and why I felt more tired than I did before!!!

I got up and experienced one of life’s greatest joys – getting to pick up my Little Princess after a sleep and give her a big “i’ve missed you” hug. After a quick nappy/diaper change I needed to wake up My Princess who was enjoying a few extra minutes sleep. For some reason a few extra minutes work for her though they never work for me. I needed My Princess to do the morning routine today (we usually share/alternate) as I needed to get ready for my radio show.

Yeah, you heard me right. I now have a radio show on It is called FMD & Me and it is hosted by myself (no surprises there) and a different guest host each week (plenty of surprises there). It is an extremely serious comedy where we chat about the joys of life and we spend the whole time laughing. We also have recurring segments and competitions where you can call up and win…………………well you just win.

You can download the podcast by going to or by clicking on the little media player on the right hand column. There are all the other great shows on there as well to check out, simply click on one to download to itunes and you can get them all and subscribe for all updates. Today’s episode has Pastor Justyn Smith and it was so much fun, check it out.

After the radio show I needed to do today’s exercises that were 90 mins long. I only got through 50 mins before I ran out of time. I jumped in the shower and made a sandwich for lunch (separately), and headed out for a meeting. The meeting was great and after it wrapped up I headed to work.

Once I got to work things went to the next level. I was thrown into the thick of it going non-stop. I started at 12.15pm and usually the first thing you do is check your emails. Well not today, I didn’t get a chance to open my inbox until 7pm. I worked hard right up until we closed at 9pm (Thursday nights is late-night shopping in Australia and my bank is so cool so we open late as well). I then drove home but my day was not done. I still had 40 mins left of exercise to complete and this awesome blog.

Some days in life are like today. In fact for many of you some weeks or even some months are like the day I had today. This is just a fact of life; and as we grow in life, in responsibility, in family, in career, and in ministry, this is what is going to happen. But no matter how my days are there is one thing I hope that never happens to me. I don’t ever want to become the “b” word. I don’t want to become “busy”.

In our world “busy” is seen as a sign of success. We apologise and say “i know you are busy” and we idolise those who have big things on their plate and are successful with their work or ministry. But there is one simple reason I never want to be busy. It is because every time you require time from a busy person you are interrupting. They may give you the time you need but you are still interrupting. As soon as you are done, they rush back to their busy-ness.

I want to work really hard to never be busy. I can be full, I can be stretched, I can even be working overtime; but if you need me, I don’t want to be just interruptable, I want to be available.

Have Fun.

Great blog post! I can relate to that! You make a great point that we should be available, not interruptable… thanks for sharing these thoughts!

And out of curiosity… what does your Spanish comment at the start REALLY say? I have a feeling it’s something to do with the bathroom….
