A Dozen Days Deducing a Duece on a Detox Diet

November 4th, 2010

Hi there.

Yep, no new intro, but the title coming up soon is a bit of a treat.

Let me tell you a story. This story feels like the never-ending story but I can assure you that it has only been going on for almost a year. This is my year-long quest to lose weight. I am coming to the end of this year and indeed the end of my weight-loss journey; so I decided to finish this the way it began. May I introduce to you this week’s episode:

“A Dozen Days Deducing a Duece on a Detox Diet”

Gosh you are looking awesome today!!! Well done on finding this message.

I told you it was a treat.

It was Christmas of 2008 and we had been given a Wii Fit as a present from my Princess’ parents. This is something that I had really wanted and was so pumped to start using. I turned it on, choose my Mii (the avatar I created) and then weighed in. It then did three things that shocked me. It showed me that I weighed 82.7kg (182lb); it told me I was overweight; and then it proceeded to change my thin, sporty avatar into a fat one. I did not like the look of a fat FMD.

You see my problem was simply this. I see the best in people and seeing I am one of my most favourite people, I continued to see this young, fit, sprightly man when it was apparent to everyone else that that was not the case. The other problem was that I had always been thin. I weighed 55kg (121lb) ever since I was 15 up until I was 22 years old, and it took me 4 years to come to grips that this was no longer the case. I was officially overweight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 29.1 which was 2kg (4.4lb) less than being officially obese. This was scary news!

Now the healthy range BMI for an adult is 18 -25, with overweight being 25-30 and obese being 30+. I know that the BMI is not the perfect way to guage health as extremely muscly people will weigh more than the average person so their BMI will be much higher. Now I have been described in many positive ways over the years; but extremely muscly is not one of them; so I thought the BMI scale is fine for me. The Wii Fit then got something stuck in my head. It said “Statistically people with a BMI of 22 get sick less often, for you a BMI of 22 would mean you would have to weigh 62.1kg (137lb)”. So there is no such thing as the perfect BMI but if you had to aim for something, 22 is the way to go. That is what I set my sights on.

The first part of my story has already been shared. I started on a detox diet of only fruit and vegetables, brown rice and water; and made sure I ate 5 times a day. After I finished that I went straight into a meal-replacement diet. In the first 4 months I lost 12.2 kg (27lb) and got to a BMI of 24.98 which meant I was officially not overweight anymore. I thought I would slow down, get off the diet and lose weight slowly – only 1kg (2.2lb) a month to get me to my goal weight at the end of the year. Oh how I was wrong.

Dieting is one thing, generally eating healthy when you’re not dieting is another; and the hardest thing is generally eating healthy and trying to lose weight. I tried to do that and it didn’t work. I tried to get on a easier modified diet and that didn’t work. I could not lose weight by doing life normally. So over 6 months my weight goes up and down 2kg (4.4lb) and I get to half way through September at 71.4kg (157.5lb). I then say to myself it is time to focus everything I have into completing this diet and I start back on the meal-replacement diet with no shortcuts.

It starts to work and I get back on the weight-loss train. It looks like I would be finishing early by the end of November, but instead I have one final challenge. I want to finish where I started off, with the detox diet.

Today is day three of the diet and I have lost 900 grams (2lb). I only have 2.1 kg (4.5lb) to go with 7 days left of the diet. Last time I lost 2.7kg (6lb) in the 10 days but I am hoping for 3kg (6.6lb) this time to finish this thing forever.

Will I make it or will I crumble under the pressure of the vegetarian detox and eat a whole pig. Of course I won’t, I rebuke that. Tune in next week to see how I go and be a part of this very special moment. Until then make sure you…

Have Fun.

Dan
